Basic Characteristics of Computer Network

Updated
1 min read

There are mainly four characteristics any Computer network should posses.

They are:

  1. Fault Tolerance

  2. Scalability

  3. Quality of Service

  4. Security

1.Fault Tolerance:

The ability to:

  • Continue working despite of failures.

  • Ensure no loss of service.

→Fault tolerance in a network is the ability of the network to continue operating even when some of its components fail.

2.Scalability:

The ability to:

  • Grow based on the needs.

  • Have good performance after growth.

→Scalability in computer networks is the ability of a network to handle increasing demands while maintaining performance and reliability.

3.Quality of service:

The ability to:

  • Set priorities.

  • Manage data traffic to reduce data loss, dealy etc.

→Quality of service (QoS) in computer networks (CN) is a set of technologies that manage network traffic and prioritize applications to ensure they perform well even when network capacity is limited.

4.Security:

The ability to prevent:

  • Unauthorized access.

  • Misuse.

  • Forgery.

The ability to provide:

  • Confidentiality.

  • Integrity.

  • Availability.

→Computer network security protects the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of data transmitted between devices on a network.
